Leadership topic - Time

Time is the one thing every leader is given in the same amount, and the one almost nobody can account for. Your calendar says where it went. The people who matter most to you could tell you where it did not. The question is the same at the office and at home: where is your Time actually going, and would the people you love agree with the answer?

Kansas released Leftoverture on October 21, 1976, and 50 years later the band is still on the road, with almost none of the men who made it on the stage. Steve Walsh retired in 2014, Robby Steinhardt died in 2021, Phil Ehart left the road after a heart attack in 2024, and Rich Williams says he is slowing down, not stopping. Kerry Livgren, who wrote Dust in the Wind, once came home from a tour to a daughter who was 3 and decided there was no second chance with that Time.

My roommate in college Wes introduced me to Kansas. Their complicated album tracks are still some of my favorites… Wes died over 10 years ago… so very poignant. Having just written about Legacy, it is a tough memory. I wonder if we should write about “Time” as the theme… what time means and what is it about it passing that makes it more important for all leaders. So Time has shown those early failures were great gifts. Come along for 7 days with Kansas, and count where yours goes…
